The information below is taken from the booklet and website 'Monumental Inscriptions St. John's Church' with the kind permission of Neville Hurworth on behalf of the Oakwood and District Historical Society and David Donaldson on behalf of the Oakwood Church. In the early 1990s a dedicated group of Oakwood residents began to record the monuments at Roundhay St. John's Church for posterity. The project took about eight years. The list of inscriptions will be published on the Oakwood Church website. (It is currently being adapted in order to be available in PDF form in most browsers). I have taken the liberty of copying all the military monuments on the property. I have also added a few other groups: incumbents, mayors, ancestors of the Duchess of Cambridge and what I have termed 'notables'. Certainly, there are many 'notables' and the few I have chosen are not intended to be comprehensive and I'm sure this section will be added to in time. If you have any information that you think could be included I'd like to hear from you, either via the blog page or my contact details.

MAYORS (12)
Mayor of Leeds, 1890 (A poem recited by Children for the Centenary of Roundhay St. John's Church)
In me a mayor of Leeds behold!
A man of mark in days of old,
Before Leeds heard of Roundhay.
Of course we knew the country round
Was once a Royal hunting ground
But no one went to Roundhay.
Since then a century has passed,
And everybody knows at last
How much Leeds owes to Roundhay
The people come from far and near
To breathe fresh air and get good cheer
And roam the Park at Roundhay.
And when Leeds wants a new Lord Mayor
It finds him out at Roundhay where,
They've always one or two to spare-
A real "Mayors Nest" is Roundhay!

Also a dear husband and father Rowland WINN M.B.E., J.P. who passed away Jan 1st 1959 aged 87 years Honorary Freeman of this city and Lord Mayor 1938-1939. Rowland Winn was a remarkable gentleman. He was born in 1871, was the son of an architect and attended Leeds Modern School, the same school that Alan Bennett attended decades later. After serving an engineering apprenticeship he opened a cycle-building and repair shop with two friends, eventually becoming the sole owner.
Mr. Winn had developed a great interest in the burgeoning popularity of the motor car and the internal combustion engine. In his late 20s, he became the first owner of a car sales garage in Leeds selling high-end foreign and domestic models.
In 1902 he was the first person in Leeds to be convicted for speeding at 12mph at a time when 4mph was considered the norm! As an advertising stunt for his business, behind the Leeds Town Hall, he drove his Oldsmobile up the Town Hall steps. In 1903 the automobile was officially recognized as a genuine form of transport and the speed limit was raised from 4mph to 20mph! Mr. Winn bought the first registered car with the number plate U1 which he presented to his friend who was elected Lord Mayor of Leeds. This is still the official number plate of the Leeds Lord Mayor's official car!
As befitted his daring spirit, in 1911, Mr. Winn raced his 'stripped down' Model T Ford on Saltburn beach. He won the race having reached the speed of 44.5mph!
In the 1920s and 30s his business expanded and as the result of a business trip to the USA Henry Ford, calling him the Yorkshire Lad, appointed him as the first Ford dealer in Yorkshire. Mr. Winn also offered Chevrolets and Buicks for sale, the later incorporating the new feature of front-wheel braking.
Along with his motor trade business Mr. Winn served as a Councillor (Conservative) on the Leeds City Council eventually becoming Lord Mayor for the 1938-39 term.
Having a generous spirit. in 1904 he founded the Leeds Children's Holiday Camp in Morecambe which provided Holidays for needy children.
In 1956, three years before he died, he was awarded the Freedom of the City in recognition of his services.
Rowland Winn lived latterly at 48 Woodland Lane, Chapel Allerton. He died on 1st January 1959 at the Retreat in York leaving his estate of £7059.1s.11d to his daughter, Gladys.

Margaret (Peggy) WHITE C.B.E. was the Lord Mayor of Leeds 1995/1996. Peggy was described as a "formidable power in the regional Conservative Party" and was recognised for her work in Social Services and was made a CBE.
Peggy and her husband were members of the Roundhay St. John's congregation and her husband was buried in the north yard in 1988.
Peggy was very upset about the state of the graveyards at St. John's after the congregation left to share the Oakwood Church with the Methodists. She tended to be very outspoken and expressed her opinion in a letter to the Yorkshire Evening Post. g_action_needed_on_churchyard_peggy_white_yep_9-2012.jpg
She explained that she intended to be buried in the north yard with her husband but was very upset that the north yard was overgrown.
In 2013 she passed away unexpectedly at age 86. Sadly, due to the situation at the church, she was not able to be buried at St. John's with her husband, Peter, as was her wish. Her funeral was held in Headingley.
Roundhay St. John's Church yard is the last resting place for twelve of Leeds' Mayors/Lord Mayors, but the number should probably be 13, which is why her name is being duly recognized here.

Thomas Michael GREENHOW M.D. born 5th July 1792 died 25th October 1881. Anne GREENHOW born 1st March 1812 died 8th April 1905. (great great great great grandfather of the Duchess of Cambridge)
Dr. Greenhow was an esteemed surgeon in Newcastle who had experience in various aspects of medicine including obstetrics, ophthalmology and orthopedics. He pioneered some surgeries and invented a device to aid in the healing of leg fractures and which also improved the comfort of the patient. Probably, his understanding of the importance of a clean hospital environment and his insistence on using clean dressings on wounds had the most lasting impact. In 1852 he foretold that Newcastle would suffer a cholera epidemic due to the unsanitary conditions in the city. Unfortunately, his warning was not heeded and an outbreak occurred a year later and hundreds died. He married Elizabeth Martineau from a family of social reformists. She died in 1850 in Newcastle. He then married Anne Lupton who was his son-in-law’s (Francis Lupton) sister, Ann Lupton, in 1854.

Charles Charles was Stephen Nicholson’s gamekeeper when William Nicholson (William was Stephen’s nephew and heir) lived in a house which is thought to have been attached to the Roundhay Fox buildings. Due to recent burglaries in the locality Charles had been tasked with keeping a lookout on the properties during the night but although William was aware of the burglaries he was not aware that Charles had sat in his porch due to the rainy weather. William's dog barked at sounds of Charles' gun scraping against the wall and William and his wife awoke. William and his groom left the house by the back door, and walked around the side until they could see the front door. It was there that William saw what he thought to be an armed burglar and shot twice hitting poor Charles in the stomach who was in the process of firing thinking that he had awoken to an armed burglar himself. Charles died the next day of his wounds but not before he was able to give an account of his side of the story. William was devastated at his mistake and promised Charles that he would take care of his wife and four children. A sad case of mistaken identity which lead the coroner, The Revd. Armitage Rhodes, to issue the following statement,"I, think, gentlemen, that this inquiry will serve to show to all of us the necessity of the most extreme caution in the use of firearms". {A lesson for the ages I think!}. A verdict of misadventure was pronounced. Mrs. Thompson lived the rest of her life with her youngest daughter in the St. John's Church almshouses on Wetherby Road.

James Miller Swanson Wood, was the son of James Wood and was born in Nigg, Kincardinshire (it seems to be pretty well a suburb of Aberdeen) on the 22nd October 1876. In the roll of Graduates 1860 - 1900 he is recorded as having achieved a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Chemistry. At the time the list was prepared (published 1906) he was living in Rotherham, Yorkshire.
In the list of graduates 1901 - 1925 (published 1935) his address is given as Maltby, Rotherham, Yorkshire, which must be correct. They further state that he died in Leeds 16th December 1932.
They record that he served in the 1914 - 1918 war, being made a Lieutenant in the RAMC on 25th August 1917; he served in England and in France and reached a final rank of Captain.

Walter Edmund was born in Loughborough the eldest of 8 children. He set his sights on Olive Florence Bailey whom he married in 1922. They had 3 children, Barbara Marian, Walter William and Diana Louise. Due to his determination and intelligence he pursued higher education at night school. This path led him from draughtsman/engineer to obtaining a position at Sperry's in London who were the manufacturers of gyroscopes. In 1939, a few months before the start of World War 2, he moved to Leeds with his family to become the managing director of Kershaw's in Harehills. Kershaws were well-known for their lenses, gun-sights etc. He retired in 1946 to establish a small series of grocery shops called Merevale (Bakeries) named after the house the Mills lived in on Wetherby Road. The shops were located in Doncaster, Carcroft, Bramley and Halton. The last of these shops closed in the 1980s.

The Redmaynes lived in their later years in Gipton Grove, a splendid mansion with outbuildings on a six acre estate which used to be on Roundhay Road, next to and below where the 'Roundhay' pub is now located. Alfred Redmayne was a self-made man who made his money in the brewing industry. In about 1898 he bought the Gipton Wood Inn next door, which was knocked down before WW2 to make way for the building that is now the 'Roundhay'. When he died the Gipton Wood Inn was taken over by his son, Horace, a veteran of the Boer War, who less than a year after his father had died, retired from the bar in a pub in Sheepscar run by his step-mother, to cash up the evening's takings, and sadly, shot himself with his service revolver.
On September 15th 1911, the Yorkshire Evening Post reported on the tragedy.
Under tragic circumstances the death occurred at midnight of Mr. Horace Redmayne, aged 30. He was the licensee of the Gipton Wood Inn, Roundhay Road, Leeds. In the serving bar of the Golden Cross Hotel, Sheepscar, of which his stepmother holds the licence, he was found a few minutes after 12 o'clock with a bullet wound in his head from which he died ten minutes later. A five chambered revolver, apparently a new one, was lying by his side, two chambers having been discharged.
Through the South African War, through which Mr. Redmayne served with the Imperial Yeomanry and saw much active service he has suffered from rheumatism and periodically violent pains in the head. The death of his father, Mr. Alfred Redmayne seemed to trouble him very much and he had recently been attended by Dr. O'Connell. To his numerous acquaintances he made little complaint and was known as a genial companion.
Last night he visited the Queen's Theatre with his wife, he chatted with several friends and was quite cheerful. He and Mrs. Redmayne to whom he was married some five years ago, returned to the Golden Cross Hotel about 11pm where they had been staying recently. Mr. Redmayne, leaving his wife in the breakfast room, went into the serving bar to cash-up. He remained there some time looking through various documents.
It had just struck twelve when Mr. Samuel Miller, of 83 Albert Grove, who chanced to be passing the Golden Cross Hotel, heard two shots fired and a moment later Mrs. Redmayne rushed out of the front door and requested him to summon medical aid and to call in the police. Mr. Miller ran across to the Sheepscar Police Station and two police-constables went across to the hotel.
They found Mr. Horace Redmayne doubled up in a heap behind the serving bar. Drs. Richardson and Clegg, who happened to be passing at that time, promptly gave their help. Mr. Redmayne was unconscious but had a bullet wound to the right side of the head from which he died ten minutes later. The police took charge of the revolver which they picked up from the floor near him and also of a letter left by the deceased which will doubtless be referred to at the inquest, which the City Coroner, (Mr.J.C. Malcolm) has fixed for two o'clock on Monday afternoon.
Mr. Horace Redmayne was the popular son of a popular father. He was an exceptionally clever marksman and also won several local important prizes as a bowler. He leaves a widow with whom the greatest sympathy is felt. They had no children.
The Leeds Mercury reported on the inquest during which it was revealed that there had been difficulties with the administration of Mr. Alfred Redmayne's estate. This had troubled Horace which led him to take his own life.

In the early 1800s, the area known as Roundhay, three miles north of Leeds, was rural and comprised of about a dozen farms. One of these properties, the farm buildings of which, were located on the site of the 'Homesteads' on Old Park Road next to the North Leeds Cricket Club, (backing onto what is now the Soldiers' Field) became part of the Nicholson estate. Richard Hartley, who farmed over 200 acres here, died in 1832 and his son, John, continued farming in the area until his death in 1869. Richard and John Hartley are buried in the south graveyard of Roundhay St. John's Church right in the far corner close to the end of the Church near the boundary wall. Richard would have been among the first dozen or so to be buried there since the church was built in 1826.
Richard's grandson, also named Richard, inherited the tenancy of the farm. William Nicholson Nicholson's widow died in 1871 and several hundred acres of the Nicholson estate, which included this farm, was purchased by the Council to make Roundhay Park and Richard and his family were required to move as the Council needed the property for roads and development and wanted to sell the farm buildings to recoup some of the purchase price of the estate. Fortunately, Richard and his large family of ten children, all of whom lived to adulthood, moved to South Milford to farm land on the Steeton Hall Estate and prospered. He and his wife retired to Boston Spa. Richard died in 1911 at age 81 and was buried in Wetherby Cemetery. Neville Hurworth, who researched and kindly shared this information, gave a talk on this subject to the Oakwood and District Historical Society. He said that the Hartley grave is unusual as most of the local farmers are buried elsewhere, for example, Barwick-in-Elmet, Chapel Allerton Cemetery and some in America. Gunner Henry Stubbs

Gunner Henry Stubbs, First Reserve Royal Horse Artillery, Field Artillery, (Service Number151999) is memorialized on the new Commonwealth War Graves memorial situated on the edge of the north yard at the top of the drive. The new monument was erected in case the south yard should be too dangerous for visits. Because Gunner Stubbs died in England his body is buried in St. John's south graveyard.
Sharon Donaldson kindly researched Gunner Stubbs biography. This is also available in full, and with pictures, on the Oakwood Church website: www.oakwoodchurch.info/roundhaystjohn Henry was born in February 1889 in Morley to Samuel and Ellen Stubbs. Samuel was a Licensed Victualler of the Albion Inn, Morley. Henry married Eliza Oldroyd on 5th August 1911 at St. John's Church and they lived in Bilton Villa on Ladywood Road. It appears that Henry and Eliza had three children, two of whom died as babies and are buried in the Oldroyd family grave in Wortley. Henry's father, Samuel, died in 1907 and was buried at St. John's where Henry was interred in 1917. |
